August 31st, 2001

Well, as I said back on August 31st, 2001, Sherie Scott is woefully miscast in 'The Last Five Years.' That's somewhat fortunate, because the incredibly talented Norbert Leo Butz shines even brighter in his role when compared to Sherie. Most of the changes to the show since its Skokie incarnation worked for me, but the replacement of "I Could Be in Love With Someone Like You" is, I feel, misguided. I still feel that overall, this is JRB's best work to date, and I hope it has a long and successful run.

Last Five Years

May it Last Five Years (at least).
Went to see Jason Robert Brown's new show 'The Last Five Years' yesterday. Having the advantage of seeing it in Chicago last June, I can say that the show has grown and should be a certain crowd pleaser for anyone who has ever been through a relationship. With an excellent cast and Jason on piano, it is worth the $60 top price easily. And thank you to Arielle Tepper and Marty Bell for selling $20 tickets (first and last rows) to the show to allow everyone to see this piece.

To help that along... Lauren Kennedy, who originated the role of Kathy in Skokie, will be back in New York in late April, after her London production of 'South Pacific' closes as scheduled. Perhaps she could be persuaded to come to the Minetta Lane?

Lisbon Is Pretty Close to Us by Peter Filichia

I also happened to catch this production of The Lisbon Traviata in Boston. I had a very good time. As pointed out in the article above, there are some fascinating parallels between the opera and musical theatre worlds. Plus, it's a great play! It's playing through March 9 at Lyric Stage.

THE V WORD By LINDA STASI

A FEW years ago, I probably wouldn't even have been able to write the title of Eve Ensler's one-woman performance piece, "The Vagina Monologues," in a family newspaper without spelling it "The V- - - - - Monologues."
