Interpreting Gertrude Stein has always been a challenge. The early 20th-century writer broke from conventional usage of grammar and employed repetition and wordplay in a poetically inventive fashion. Often, there was less a focus on the meaning of her words and more emphasis placed upon the exploration of rhythm and sounds.
