Royal Opera House, London: Anyone who believes that ballet is little more than a repository of pretty myths and innocuous romanticism should be forced to see Mayerling. Sex, drugs, suicide and politics are the meat of the motion and Kenneth Macmillan embraces them all with an artistry bordering on the deranged.
