I spent the summer after my sophomore year of college driving a 1986 Chevy van named Oakie around the narrow roads of Eastern Kentucky coal country, working for an emergency home repair organization called Appalachia Service Project. Walls, floors, roofs, plumbing, wiring, and room additions. You name it, we fixed it using free volunteer labor.
