Jason Alexander: "During rehearsals," he recalls, "Sondheim said to me, 'I'm writing a new song to open the second act. Is there anything you have a problem with?' I said, 'Yes, chromatics,' And he wrote a song filled with them. I said, 'I guess you misunderstood me,' and he said, 'No, I didn't. But you've got to learn how to deal with them sometime.' And learn I did."
