Broomhill bridges opera and South African song by Terese Loeb Kreuzer

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Don Jose killed Carmen again - though for the first time at Spoleto Festival USA. The sultry gypsy was played by Pauline Malefane, 26, of Cape Town, surrounded by an ensemble of South African performers. They sang in English and delivered the dialogue in Xhosa or Afrikaans, three of South Africa's 11 official languages.
