Freeman Returns to Broadway in Odets Classic: John Simon

It has been a season for black stars to make good in white roles on Broadway: S. Epatha Merkerson in "Come Back, Little Sheba" and especially James Earl Jones in "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" have earned deserved accolades. But in the worthwhile revival of Clifford Odets's "The Country Girl," Morgan Freeman is a problem.
