Actor-playwright Joe Roland, 37, was a room-service waiter at the Drake Hotel in 1995 when 100 workers walked off the job as the threat of a citywide strike loomed. More than a decade later, with help from powerhouse director Mike Nichols, Roland's play inspired by the plight of working people like them is about to open Off-Broadway.
