Sam Shepard: Man of the theater; the theater of a man
Sam Shepard, playwright, actor, novelist, producer, director, and so much else, died on July 27. His 50-plus-year career was among the most consistent and accomplished in U.S. dramatic history. His was a theater of outsiders, people on the fringes, in search of self and place. His work has often, and will often be, on Philadelphia stages.
