Idiomatic phrases ("demand a pound of flesh") and famous monologues ("the quality of mercy") aside, "The Merchant of Venice" has given the language one of its more sinister nouns: Shylock. The name of the title character has become eponymous with "ruthless moneylender or loan shark."
