For more than a quarter of a century, Washington has had a recurring dream of an "Elmer Gantry" musical. The show, based on Sinclair Lewis's 1927 novel " perhaps better known as the 1960 Burt Lancaster film, but not to be confused with the nearly instant 1970 Broadway flameout "Gantry" " reappeared at Ford's Theatre in 1995 after premiering there with plenty of fanfare in 1988.
