As a divided country stopped to watch the results of fiercely fought political battles on Tuesday night, a united audience of almost 2,700 gathered to follow the adventures of a feisty feminist heroine and book-loving intellectual who rejected marriage, wanted more than "this provincial life" and proved braver than all of the men in her world.
