Zhang Huan, AGO, Shangri-La, Canadian Opera Company, Semele by Murray Whyte

In 1998, Zhang Huan stripped naked and had writers inscribe his flesh with proverbs and poetry from Chinese and Buddhist literature and history. He then picked up the bloody rib cage of a freshly slaughtered pig, flesh dripping from the bones, and slung it around himself like a coat of armour. He called the performance 1 of 2, which could leave you wondering, agape, what he might do for an encore.
