"If you look at what is successful on Broadway - 'The Producers,' 'Hairspray' and 'Avenue Q' - they're not interesting shows musically," Brown said. "One of the important things to note about me and Michael John LaChiusa and Adam Guettel and Andrew Lippa is that we are musicians first. And Broadway is a very frustrating place to be a musician, because audiences don't appreciate anything beyond the most simple."
