Peter Stein's sprawling, surprisingly straightforward story-theater adaptation of "The Demons" was intensely performed, but not always enthralling. Despite a powerful finish, the day was less a revelation than a feisty combination of Camp Dostoyevsky spirit and extreme theatergoing competition.
