Irvin Kershner, 'Empire Strikes Back' Director, Dies at 87 by Dave Itzkoff

Greeted with mixed reviews at the time of its release, "The Empire Strikes Back" earned $200 million in its initial release at the U.S. box office, setting the stage for four more "Star Wars" sequels over the next 25 years.
