Skip Kennon and Fred Landau have their hearts in the right place in adapting the 1984 comic fantasy "The Last Starfighter" to the musical stage. But without the special effects the big screen and a big budget afford, the slender story derived from Jonathan Betuel's original screenplay can't bear the weight of a full-length musical, despite the enjoyable score.
