Early on in Elevator Repair Service's Ulysses, which opened tonight at the Public Theater in a co-production with the Under the Radar Festival, we are reminded by co-director and dramaturg Scott Shepherd of something the Irish writer Sally Rooney has said of the source material, James Joyce's decidedly opaque 1922 novel of the same title: "Every reading of 'Ulysses' is a misreading."
