No Flower Drum Song: L.A. Revival Cancels Due to Lack of Funding

Blind Email Received:

Pity the creditors of Jane Eyre. With very little left in the bank, some insiders are wondering how the show will even afford to load out of the theatre.

Even creative types like Larry Hochman (the show's ochestrator) are still waiting for their payment.

What is happening at RICHARDS/CLIMAN,INC.? The general managers have recently lost DINNER WITH FRIENDS and BELLS ARE RINGING and now with JANE EYRE breathing her last breath, they will be left with no shows.

As far as I know, "Bells" is still a go. And "Jane Eyre" played 93% last week, and is well financed... "Dinner With Friends" played for about a year, I think, at the Variety Arts, a nice run so far. Although Richards/Climan don't seem to have enough business sense to return phone calls, they are otherwise pretty smart people.

Sing-a-long Sound of Music On NBC Dec. 17; Moves to Loews State in NYC Dec. 22

It is the middle of December, right? We are having a fall-like rain storm right now in NYC. It is such the perfect Sunday morning noise. Just the rain patter with the occasional rumble of thunder... it really makes you want to grab a blanket and stay on the couch all day and watch movies. But alas, there is shopping to do and places to be.

National Music Theater Network continues to impress me with their work in the development of new musicals and the ability to follow thru with what so many other similar groups promise, but never deliver on. Check out their website here.

The Decca Broadway website has some really good features. One feature of note is "David Merrick: The Abominable Showman". This short piece is about the two Merrick shows (Carnival and Mack and Mabel) which Decca recorded. This piece is not related to Howard Kissel's unauthorized biography, which bares the same title.

Tams-Witmark website. Signs that the apocalypse is approaching: Tams finally put up a website. It really must be the 21st Century. (In a few days...)

12/16/00
On this date in 1916, Gregory Rasputin, the monk who had wielded powerful influence over the Russian court, was murdered by a group of noblemen. Today's birthdays include: Steven Bochco, Benny Andersson, Sir Noel Coward and Ludwig van Beethoven.

"Flower Drum" Sayonara: The revised version of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical "Flower Drum Song," which had been scheduled to open April 29 at the Ahmanson Theatre in downtown L.A., has been canceled. Center Theatre Group producing director Gordon Davidson said Friday that not enough money was raised to mount the production on time. No immediate replacement was announced.

Producer of "Bells are Ringing" says plans are going forward to the presentation of the musical.

Suddenly Seussical? With Rosie coming into the Fran and Barry co-adventure into the magical world of troubled Seuss, could other stars be encouraged to take over after Rosie if Mr. Shiner extends his vacation? Was that Brooke seen leaving 165 W. 46th the other day? Of course, we don't know...

I have been meaning to mention this for a week, but it never made it to the update. Tiger Woods was fined $100,000 for shooting a Buick ad during the SAG/AFTRA strike on commercial advertising. This was an appropriate fine in my opinion. Lets hope the $50,000 goes toward helping out actors who suffered during the strike. (The other $50,000 was suspended.)

Jekyll & Hyde will be taped for PPV Dec 18. Rumor has it that Hasselhoff is Exec Producer of the taping...
