Like his good friend Geoffrey Rush, Brown was a gifted comic. Each grew up in small-town Queensland. They met doing student theatre at university. In a statement yesterday, Rush said: "We have lost a great and truly original man of the theatre and I have farewelled a brother . . . He will be profoundly missed by those who knew the pleasure of his generous inspirational company."
