When "Superior Donuts" followed on the heels of Tracy Letts' award-winning "August: Osage County" and "Killer Joe" before that, critics seemed to be stymied. That Mr. Letts could come out of those deep, dark places and land in a sweet shop with friendship and redemption on the menu seemed like sugar overload by comparison.
