Farce has to be grounded in reality. That way, when it takes off from reality, we're anchored. Christopher Durang understood this in "Betty's Summer Vacation"; Michael Frayn, whose "Noises Off" is on Broadway now, knows the need for stage discipline to be established to offset backstage chaos.
