[ STARS ]  ROZ RYAN: STRUTTING HER STUFF AND DELIVERING THE OLD RAZZLE DAZZLE IN CHICAGO
by ELLIS NASSOUR

Roz Ryan has a spectacular vocal magic. When combined with her quick wit, boisterous laugh and saucy sassiness, you get quite a package. As audiences are seeing now that she's returned to Broadway, playing Matron "Mama" Morton in Chicago. During her quarter century in show business, Ryan's done it all. Rarely do you find an artist that is 100% show business.

"Chinese Friends" - Reviews:

[ NYT ]  THEATER REVIEW | 'CHINESE FRIENDS'
It Is 2030 and Oedipal Tensions Still Rage by BEN BRANTLEY

None of Jon Robin Baitz's paternal figures have been held accountable for their sins as brutally as Arthur Brice is in this formula-crippled futurist drama.

[ SUN ]  Game Over by JEREMY McCARTER
If the show's combination of personal and political had worked, everybody would praise Mr. Baitz for fusing Pinter and Stoppard. The reality is more like the two of them having a pillow fight.

[ ND ]  REVIEW: "Chinese Friends" BY LINDA WINER
Instead of feeling suspense and revelation, we keep thinking about the old "Spy vs. Spy" cartoons in Mad magazine.

[ JN ]  'Friends' in need ... indeed by JACQUES LE SOURD
In "Chinese Friends," a truly abysmal play by Jon Robin Baitz that opened last night at Playwrights Horizons...

[ Y ]  'Chinese Friends' Disappointing by MICHAEL KUCHWARA, AP Drama Critic
Good intentions are not enough. "Chinese Friends," Jon Robin Baitz's new drama at off-Broadway's Playwrights Horizons, is deadly earnest in its outrage, convoluted in its storytelling and stultifying in its execution.

[ TB ]  Chinese Friends
Review by Matthew Murray

While it's entirely possible that Chinese Friends could make a terrific novel, it makes a pretty terrible play.

[ NJ ]  Melodramatic 'Chinese Friends' BY MICHAEL SOMMERS
Oh, dear, when good playwrights go wrong they sometimes make an awful mess of things.

[ B ]  Chinese Friends
Review by William Stevenson

It's an interesting premise, but the uninvolving play largely consists of intellectually pretentious conversations and shrill yelling.

[ CU ]  Chinese Friends

[ DN ]  In 2 shows, key players held to account by Howard Kissel

"Chinese Friends" and "The Triangle Factory Fire Project."

"Here Lies Jenny" - Reviews:

[ NYT ]  THEATER REVIEW | 'HERE LIES JENNY'
The Music of Bitter Memories in a Raunchy Bar Full of Both by BEN BRANTLEY

Bebe Neuwirth stars in this cigarillo-slender show that weaves assorted songs by Kurt Weill into a vague narrative cycle about the life and times of one weary woman.

[ SUN ]  Bright as a Penny by WILL FRIEDWALD
For a star, Bebe Neuwirth makes what can only be called a stealth entrance.

[ ND ]  REVIEW: "Here Lies Jenny" BY GORDON COX
As for its nebulous plot, Neuwirth and friends always seem to know what's going on, even if we don't.

[ Y ]  Neuwirth Takes Walk on Weill Side by MICHAEL KUCHWARA, AP Drama Critic
It's sort of a last-chance saloon, a dank, dilapidated bar for life's losers who happen to wander in off the street. The vaguely European setting is the framework for "Here Lies Jenny," a puzzling cabaret showcase for the songs of Kurt Weill.

[ NJ ]  'Jenny's' vulnerability BY MICHAEL SOMMERS
An arty nightclub act that's not as much fun as it should be, "Here Lies Jenny" opened yesterday at the Zipper Theatre, where the 75-minute attraction plays three 11 p.m. showings every week through mid-July.

[ TM ]  Here Lies Jenny

Seeing Through Blindfolds? Reading Minds? Why, It's Magic by LAWRENCE VAN GELDER

Marc Salem is up to his old tricks. That's good news for theatergoers, especially families in search of mind-boggling entertainment sugared with quick wit and plenty of laughter.

[ DN ]  Heavy mentalist amazes by Howard Kissel
Salem is, quite simply, phenomenal.
