"Candide":

Voltaire via Bernstein, Donald Trump Reference Included by ANTHONY TOMMASINI

The adaptation of Leonard Bernstein's "Candide" on Wednesday was vibrant and delightful, except for the tasteless jokes added by director Lonny Price.

[ DN ]  Least of all possible 'Candides' by Howard Kissel
Since Leonard Bernstein is the only dead conductor the New York Philharmonic still lists on the title page of its programs, you might imagine a respect for him would inform its current concert version of his 1956 "Candide."

[ B ]  The Distance from Here

The advance word on The Distance from Here was that it would display Neil LaBute's gentler side. Nothing doing: Several scenes rank among the playwright's darkest, including a climactic act that actually instigated screams from one audience.

[ DN ]  How many monkeys typed up 'Prymate'? by Howard Kissel

In nearly three decades of professional theatergoing, I don't think I've ever seen a play worse than Mark Medoff's "Prymate."
Admittedly, and to my eternal regret, I missed "Moose Murders."
But, reportedly, that at least provided amusement. "Prymate" just stuns you with its awfulness.

"Prymate" fittingly ends our 29th season of reviewing plays on Broadway, and we can affirm that it is the very worst thing we have seen in 29 years.

For all that's misguided in Prymate, there actually is the germ of a provocative story longing to get out. The MCC Theater production of Bryony Lavery's play, which just transferred to Circle in the Square, is a welcome glimmer of something unique and different in an otherwise fairly stolid season.
