A kind reader wrote to point out that Liz Smith is... um... ahead of her time?
Having spoken to him at Christmas Carol a few weeks ago, I'm sure Alan Menken is somewhat surprised to read today in Liz Smith's column this howler: "B & B has beautiful music by the late Alan Menken who died all too young shortly after it opened."

Clearly she's a bit, ahem, confused. Howard Ashman passed shortly after Beauty opened.
On another note, I wanted to mention that DIE MOMMIE DIE, the Charles Busch movie has been ruled eligible for Academy consideration. This in turn makes Broadway designers Bottari & Case Oscar eligible for Best Costume Design Award for designing Charles Busch's 40 costumes! Admittedly, it is a long shot as a non-mainstream release, stranger things have happened. Good luck to them.

Last night at Talkin'Broadway, JWest wondered what happened to Adam Pasca at Cabaret. It seems that Adam began the show with Wilkommen and then the show was stopped and Vance Avery took over. [ V ]  Road serving raw talent
With union budgets nixed, stix see neophytes in major revivals

Audiences attending the new national tours of "Oklahoma" and "Oliver," both bearing the stamp of Cameron Mackintosh, are for the most part getting plenty of country flavor in the former and city squalor in the latter.
While I do agree with a producer's right to mount a show as they see financially fit, using non-union talent in place of AEA members in large market venues is short-sighted. If the costs are out of control, the actor's salaries are only one item on a very large budget. The problem has to be fixed before road audiences start to shun big Broadway tours. Killing the road, which is where many Broadway shows make their money, will in turn have an adverse effect on Broadway.

The actors and actresses presented here may not all turn out to be household names, but all of them have a shot at the big time, if the insider buzz is to be believed. But why does one unknown become "hot" while another waits desperately for the phone to ring?
Yeah, I know that this is focused on TV/Film actors, but Lou Taylor Pucci worked for me a bunch of years back in a production of Peter Pan where he played a Lost Boy. He was great off and on stage. Most of all, his parents were really perfect stage parents. No ego, no pushing, just there for Lou and always accommodating. I am very very happy for Lou's success.

[ P ]  STAGE TO SCREEN: Looking Back on 2003
Looking back over last year's theatre-themed film offerings, I realize that I was a bit spoiled by 2002. "Chicago" loomed large that year, of course, but there were a handful of other satisfying mid-size adaptations (notably "The Grey Zone" and, to a lesser extent, "The Importance of Being Earnest"), not to mention major prestige pictures by Stephen Daldry, Julie Taymor and Sam Mendes.
