I'm watching a tape of Thursday's episode, Bette Midler was a guest and I love Bette Midler. She said they (I assume she meant Marc Shaiman) came to her to invest in Hairspray, she laughed and said, puh-leeze! She didn't invest. Her husband said I'm gonna invest in it, he took the papers and ran, invested his own money. Then the checks started rolling in and Bette said, well, so, what about me? She shook her finger and head no and exclaimed, I was robbed (apparently her husband wasn't sharing the wealth). After the commercial break she explained that she's known Marc Shaiman since he was 16. She said he was such a pest back then, he would nag her and get in her face and she would say please go sit in a corner somewhere. Now, he's an enormous talent, a superstar on Broadway and she's mortified that she didn't invest in his show. She said, "A prophet is without honor in his own country." Now she has to call him up and kiss his ass major, major, she joked that he holds a grudge. It was all in fun. Very cute story. Oh, and Caroline Rhea said she's a major fan, she's seen it six times, I have her beat, I've seen it ten times. : ) posted at 5/16/2003 11:55:28 PM by Susan Heim | Item Link News: [ B ] Enchanted April Plans Tour with Broadway Leads [ TM ] Drama Desk Stars and Musical Numbers Announced Features: [ CCT ] Movin' on out BY KATHI SCRIZZI DRISCOLL Paul Benedict of 'Jeffersons' fame flees typecasting on stage Thanks to American Theater Web for the following features!
