[ NYP ]  PANTS ON FIRE by BARBARA HOFFMAN
'YOU'RE late, so you're paying!" crows Joe Pantoliano. "And I'm eating a lot!" Yes, he is - and he's also showing a lot: Starting Wednesday, the guy who lost his head this season in "The Sopranos" will be losing his pants nightly in "Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune," when he and Rosie Perez succeed Stanley Tucci and that other "Sopranos" star, Edie Falco, in Terrence McNally's two-character play.

On other Broadway-related fronts, today at 1:31PM, Paige Price will be singing the National Anthem for the The New York Giants final game of the regular season. The game will be shown on FOX... Other tidbits along the way: HBO has just picked up a new series, David Milch's "Deadwood," which starts shooting in April and stars among others Keith Carradine (as Wild Bill Hickok) and "Noises Off" and "Madame Melville"'s Robin Weigert (as Calamity Jane).... Rumor has it that DOTV recording is in jeopardy because of salary demands against scary reviews, but I believe that a recording will be made. With or without an Emcee... Rachel York (breathe James, breathe...) will be taking on the role of Lucille Ball in the upcoming TV pic "Redhead" [the working title]... As yet unannounced, I've heard from a friend of Terry Mann that he'll be returning to Les Mis for the last six weeks or so, as Javert... Other Les Miz news: Lauren Kennedy will not be heading to Philly to do Last Five Years... But will she be a new Laurey? Only time will tell... Everworking Patrick Wilson was cast as Commander William Travis in the upcoming Disney film, "The Alamo"... And proving that Boheme is the hottest show on Broadway: What hot celebrity female, attending La Boheme Dec 18th, was doin' the nasty with her boyfriend in a stall of the women's room? According to reports, during Act II she was making enough noise - in the stall - that ushers had to 'break it up.' Although not asked to leave the show, they did so of their own accord...

Sorry for that burst, I was feeling Mandelbaum-ish. And if you didn't get a holiday card from me, it's not because I don't love you. I just procrastinated. You will be getting New Year's cards! (I didn't say which year!)

Reviews "Chicago":

[ NYT ]  MOVIE REVIEW | 'CHICAGO'
'Chicago,' Bare Legs and All, Makes It to Film by ELVIS MITCHELL

It's rare to find a picture as exuberant, as shallow and as exuberant about its shallowness as the film adaptation of the Broadway musical "Chicago."

[ CST ]  CHICAGO
Review by Roger Ebert

"Chicago" is a musical that might have seemed unfilmable, but that was because it was assumed it had to be transformed into more conventional terms. By filming it in its own spirit, by making it frankly a stagy song-and-dance revue, by kidding the stories instead of lingering over them, the movie is big, brassy fun.

[ ND ]  That Toddlin Town Has Energy to Burn by John Anderson
The relentless motion of "Chicago -- adapted from the 1975 Bob Fosse musical that was revived on Broadway to enormous success in 1996 -- undermines whatever emotional momentum is intended by the marriage of music and drama. But that's better than having it move like a slow amusement ride.

[ USA ]  High-kicking and streetwise 'Chicago' puts on a real show by Mike Clark
Only time will tell where Chicago will rank in the annals of splashy screen musicals. But it's at least a surefire Oscar hopeful, given the best-picture nomination that went to vocally inferior Moulin Rouge last year.

Other Reviews:

[ NYT ]  THEATER REVIEW | 'PORTERPHILES'

As the Black Ensemble Theater's Jackie Taylor reminds us in "Ella: The First Lady of Song (The Ella Fitzgerald Story)"--her latest biographical revue of a legendary black musical figure--no movie has ever been made about the life of the virtuosic vocalist.

[ CST ]  The shows must go on--and they did in '02 by Mary Houlihan
Trying to keep up with the theater scene in Chicago is a dizzying affair; some nights you just ache to stay home. But for those of us who ventured out, 2002 proved to be a darn good year for local theater.

Haul out the holly
Put up the tree before my spirit falls again
Fill up the stocking
I may be rushing things, but deck the halls again now

For we need a little Christmas
Right this very minute
Candles in the window
Carols at the spinet
Yes, we need a little Christmas
Right this very minute
It hasn't snowed a single flurry
But Santa, dear, we're in a hurry!

So climb down the chimney
Turn on the brightest string of light I've ever seen
Slice up the fruitcake
It's time we hung some tinsel on that evergreen bough

For I've grown a little leaner
Grown a little colder
Grown a little sadder
Grown a little older
And I need a little angel
Sitting on my shoulder
Need a little Christmas now!

For we need a little music
Need a little laughter
Need a little singing
Ringing through the rafter
And we need a little snappy
"Happy ever after"
Need a little Christmas now!

- Jerry Herman
