Del Rossi, who turns 69 Sunday, has been a guiding force at the theater for 40 years. He will continue as executive producer and president emeritus, but his duties will shift from managing the $20million-a-year operation to fund-raising and expanding the theater's educational programs. Although this seems like a small story on the surface with relation to what happens east of the Hudson, regional theaters have become the new out-of-town tryouts for Broadway. With the facility and infrastructure of Paper Mill already in place, I feel that this news will have a major impact upon what we love and hold dear. I wouldn't be surprised if the replacement for Angelo is a major Broadway producer... like Marty Bell? Look at the great relationships between commercial producers and the non-profit regionals of La Jolla, Old Globe, Ordway, etc... this news could possibly bring Paper Mill into a whole new realm as a starting point for new and great Broadway shows. I know that this is the dream that has been bantered around for years and on some fronts fulfilled, but not to the potential that it could be.
