Reviews:

[ INQ ]  Stoppard's fascinating fusion by Desmond Ryan
Both verbally and visually, Tom Stoppard's Every Good Boy Deserves Favor is crammed with geometric references, and the imagery fits a provocative and amusing piece that is weakened by its attempt to travel along parallel lines.
I saw EGBDF last night. Fascinating, but it didn't quite work for me. And seeing Richard Easton and Paul Hecht forget their lines repeatedly didn't help.

[ SL ]  Paper Mill Playhouse stages CEO search
40-year veteran Del Rossi will keep managing theater until a successor is found
BY PEGGY McGLONE
Star-Ledger Staff

The Paper Mill Playhouse will launch a national search for a president and chief executive officer to succeed Angelo Del Rossi, who will step down after 27 years of running the Millburn theater.

Del Rossi, who turns 69 Sunday, has been a guiding force at the theater for 40 years. He will continue as executive producer and president emeritus, but his duties will shift from managing the $20million-a-year operation to fund-raising and expanding the theater's educational programs.

Although this seems like a small story on the surface with relation to what happens east of the Hudson, regional theaters have become the new out-of-town tryouts for Broadway. With the facility and infrastructure of Paper Mill already in place, I feel that this news will have a major impact upon what we love and hold dear. I wouldn't be surprised if the replacement for Angelo is a major Broadway producer... like Marty Bell? Look at the great relationships between commercial producers and the non-profit regionals of La Jolla, Old Globe, Ordway, etc... this news could possibly bring Paper Mill into a whole new realm as a starting point for new and great Broadway shows. I know that this is the dream that has been bantered around for years and on some fronts fulfilled, but not to the potential that it could be. Lets all hope that Paper Mill succeeds

LESS than two years into its run, "The Producers," once the hottest ticket on the Great White Way, is starting to show signs of vulnerability.Advance ticket sales going into January and February have slipped; the overall advance is under $10 million (it was once over $20 million); and, according to ticket brokers, demand for group sales tickets has declined markedly.

[ NYP ]  MAMET 'MARRIAGE' FAILS By DONALD LYONS
IT'S a bit like Eminem undertaking Hamlet. In his clever play "Boston Marriage," now at the Public, David Mamet has left the mean, modern streets where men rule and has focused on a Boston drawing room of the 1880s, ruled by women.

[ NYP ]  'MORRIE' TEACHES POWERFUL LESSON IN LIFE AND DEATH By DONALD LYONS
I admit it: I've never read "Tuesdays with Morrie," nor seen the TV movie made from it. All I knew was that it was an account by a onetime pupil of his wise old mentor stricken, by not cowed by, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, better known as Lou Gehrig's disease. And that's about it.

With the recent openings of the rock-ballet "Movin' Out" and the spoken word anthology "Def Poetry Jam," not to mention the upcoming and unprecedented appearance of an opera ("La Boheme") on the Great White Way, the definition of a Broadway show keeps loosening and expanding. "Boston Marriage," as you may have heard already, is David Mamet's response to critics who say he does not create meaty roles for women.

[ DN ]  Mamet goes PG, but his play's a ZZZZ by Howard Kissel
Just as Al Hirschfeld's illustrations are known for the number of "Ninas" you can count in curly hair or shirt wrinkles, the plays of David Mamet have been characterized by how much he uses the F-word. In his latest, "Boston Marriage," it only occurs once.

[ V ]  Boston Marriage review by Charles Isherwood
David Mamet tosses out his usual theatrical lexicon and reaches rather far afield for both the style and substance of "Boston Marriage," an odd kickshaw of a comedy -- to borrow one of the many arcane words Mamet sprinkles over the play like powdered sugar -- that is much longer on the former than the latter.

Baz Luhrmann is a lot like the movies he's directed ("Strictly Ballroom," "Romeo + Juliet," "Moulin Rouge"). He is smart, brash, almost messianic. Luhrmann also has more than a little bit of the impresario in him. He's going to show you something you've never seen before - or, if you have, he is going to show it to you in a totally new way.

[ V ]  Kids today have no use for B'way by Charles Isherwood
The rap on Broadway in recent years is that it's increasingly become a department store offering the same limited number of brands, or, with Disney's steady presence, a theme park offering a very specific kind of ride.
Thanks to jdm on All That Chat! for pointing this out.
I must say that I'm happy to know a large number of men and women in their 20s and 30s who care deeply about Broadway. Of course, I wish there were more, but there are people of all ages who know Broadway is for everyone--I feel bad for the people who haven't quite figured that out yet.

Let's start with some good news and bad news for Erin Dilly fans like us.
The bad news: Her schedule is keeping her so busy that she's had to drop out of this weekend's ENCORES! 10TH ANNIVERSARY BASH.
The good news: What's keeping her busy is INTO THE WOODS. Although the producers never officially confirmed it - and as of fourteen days ago, Playbill was still referring to it as an "as-of-yet unconfirmed rumor" - Erin HAS indeed taken over as Cinderella in ITW. Her first performance was Saturday. Congratulations, Erin!

[ SF ]  Drama behind bars
San Quentin inmates taste freedom performing a play about slavery and liberation
It may have felt, for a passing moment, like any other night at the theater. But since this performance was taking place inside San Quentin State Prison, everything from set construction to crowd control was minutely scrutinized and controlled. Every bolt, screw, wrench and foot of video cable in Arthur Meiselman's steel-frame set and lighting grid had to be accounted for before and after load-in. Audience members who attended a partial preview of "John Brown's Body" in summer were advised that if they were taken hostage, "the state of California would not negotiate your release."
Matt Bogart released his new CD (Simple Song/JAY Records) last Sunday with a performance at Joe's Pub after which people remarked, "Not only drop dead beautiful and talented, but funny too!" The sold out event is rumored to be repeated in the near future. As we hear a firm date, we will let you know...
***UPDATE: Wayman Wong checked in to tell us that Matt Bogart is doing another show this Sunday at 9:30 p.m. at Joes Pub.

A reader asks:
Jerry Herman wrote a song (for Hello Dolly), "A Penny In My Pocket", which was cut for the original show and which we would like to put into the show since our Horace can make it a show-stopper we are sure. However, we will not do it without Mr. Herman's permission. Is there any way you can tell us how to get in touch with him or help us to get this request to him?
So, if there are any readers out there in touch with Jerry Herman, can you drop us an email with contact info or pass on the question to Mr. Herman?

A second reader writes:
I attended Short Talks on the Universe last night and I was extremely dismayed when Bette Midler read Nora Ephron's short play "I Hate My Purse" because I HAD HEARD IT BEFORE. I can't remember when or where, but I found myself thinking of the lines before she said them! Is it published somewhere? In any case it was clearly NOT written just for this benefit if it has been done before. Any ideas? Thanks.
Any info on that one as well would be appreciated. Because at BroadwayStars... you can have it all. (It's a slogan we are working on...)

And lastly, my favorite people of the day are Bill McCauley and Thom Goff. Just because.

But unusual legit show faces B.O. pickle

The selling power of Gotham's legit critics is about to be tested. Again.

"Russell Simmons' Def Poetry Jam" opened Nov. 14 to upbeat reviews from the Associated Press, New York Post and Daily News as well as raves from Daily Variety, the New York Times, WOR, WNBC and NY1, which gave it the quote of the year: " 'A Chorus Line' for the new millennium."

Word of mouth for Def Jam is excellent -- but it is not equating to sales yet. The comments that I received this weekend (from people unaffiliated with the show!) are: "The show was really great! I am going back with my boyfriend!" and "Thanks for the tickets - the show was phenomenal. I hope it gets more advertising because people need to know there's great theatre that 's not the usual fare. I'm letting those I know to make sure they see this piece of theatre."

By Peter Marks, Washington Post Staff Writer
If Vanessa Williams ever has occasion to look into your eyes and sing, "If I love you, that's the end of you," believe it.
