For smackin' leather, For playin' baseball! No kidding. Lynn Ahrens' lyrics from RAGTIME hit's the nail on the head. Lets hope the boys of summer find a resolution today and keep playing. But I felt that the missed opportunity by the deafening silence from the Broadway community with regard to this issue was unfortunate. The possible baseball strike is national news. Instead of Broadway complaining about the NFL kickoff (in Times Square) and cancellation of some shows on Sept 11th, what the leadership of the Broadway community should have done is to harness the news of the nation to put the spotlight back on the real national pastime: Broadway, and theater in general. What if someone, like a Gerry Shoenfeld or Jed Bernstein, stood up and said, "If baseball strikes, bring your tickets from any unplayed Major League Baseball game to a Broadway (or touring house around the nation) box office nearest you for a seat at our next performance..." (based on ticket availability of course) do you think that Broadway would have gotten a little PR? A few new fans possibly? It is then that these leaders (Shoenfeld or Bernstein) could address the issues that the public has with Broadway on a national stage -- like the cost of ticket prices. Most Broadway show top ticket prices are less expensive than Yankees, Mets, Knicks, Giants, Jets, Rangers, Islanders and Devils tickets. You are asking how to fund it? If the baseball games are cancelled, the teams are required to refund the money to the ticket holders. Why not let the public use the ticket at a Broadway theater and then The League work payment/refunds out with the teams. No one is saying that this is an easy solution, but it is one that would have been good for Broadway in a financial sense, a political sense and in a public relations sense. Unfortunately, Broadway producers and theater owners only like to work with a small select few of their friends and cannot see the benefit of working as an entire industry together. My opinion of course.
