[ V ]  Free to Be You and Me
Review by Charles Isherwood

Saw The Prince and The Pauper last night at The Lambs.
A very strong cast of 12 plays numerous roles (perhaps 36+ roles?). A star is born in Allison Fisher, who plays Lady Jane. While I expect that the show is still tightening up for a Sunday opening, it still runs long for its target audience. With ticket prices at $55 and $40, certainly more Princes than Paupers will be able to see this, which may be the shortfall on the business side. Approximate break even is about 40% paid audience (about 1,100 tickets per week, or 138 per show) without discounting -- so it may work through the summer. It is in need of a strong review to help. With the Producer of The Prince and The Pauper (Carolyn Rossi Copeland) also having the title of Producing Artistic Director of The Lambs, a certain synergy between the production and The Lamb's Theater Company could help (hopefully the stop clause percentage will be more flexible as P&P finds its audience). It probably needs a cast recording as well... Regardless of what happens with this production, it is another step of a great set of talents making their way to Broadway. You will certainly hear more from composer Neil Berg, director Ray Roderick and musical supervisor John Glaudini.

Maintenance! Just need to catch you up on a few things, a few opinions and such...

The 2002 BroadwayStars Tony Awards Contest was a fun endeavour once again with about 5,000+ entries. Coming out on top with 19 of 22 correct answers were four readers: Donald Feltham (Los Angeles), Michael Schilke (NYC), Jim Malloy (NJ), and Karen Zornow (NYC). The tie-breaking email was sent out to them on Monday, June 3 @ 3PM.

Donald Feltham, who is known to many of you as the voice of the Broadway Radio Hour over at Bruce Kimmel's "Haines, His Way" website, was the first to respond to the email taking the Grand Prize ($50 Amazon Gift Certificate and 2 tix to CAREER TRANSITIONS FOR DANCERS annual 'Next Step Gala' at City Center "Shall We Dance" a Richard Rodgers celebration. Donald promised that he would not use the Amazon Gift Certificate to buy Fynsworth Alley CDs...

Jennifer Kalman, our most northern fan, scored 18 of 22. (She asked me.)

On other fronts, we missed something in the New York Times about 10 days ago. Roger Gindi, a Broadway producer, wrote a letter to the Times regarding Jesse McKinley's article about where the money from a Broadway ticket goes. Roger makes two clarifications to Jesse's article with regard to investor return.

Mike Burstyn Plays Doctor in National Tour of Allergist's Wife Come Fall.

We have been lax at getting updates going in the morning. Call it post-Tony exhaustion. :-) I hope to get back to the old schedule of updates soon.

ONCE UPON A PRIMETIME, an original musical comedy, is opening in LA this June at Powerhouse Theatre, 3116 2nd Street, Santa Monica. Amanda Green (we love her) has written the lyrics. Curtis Moore created the score.

The "Add a Star" feature is still broken. Hopefully I will get to it sometime soon...

And last but not least... Catherine is back today from London! We hope to get a full report of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

[ DN ]  Top Tunes Bustin' Out All Over
To end its "Broadway by the Year" season, Town Hall presented songs Monday from musicals that opened in the spectacular 1964. In addition to "Hello, Dolly!", "Funny Girl" and "Fiddler on the Roof," there were excerpts from the musical version of Budd Schulberg's "What Makes Sammy Run?" (the composer, Ervin Drake, was in the audience) and Stephen Sondheim's "Anyone Can Whistle."

[ DN ]  B'way Goes on a Picnic
The first "Broadway Under the Stars" concert Monday turned Bryant Park into a mini-Woodstock without the mud. More than 10,000 people of all ages jammed into the park, covering the grass with blankets, sheets and curtains, suggesting an audience for more of these Monday concerts.
If you expect to see any of that grass you better show up more than an hour beforehand. Next time I will know better. I was impressed with the number of people standing on the sides, underneath the trees. There had to be thousands over there, they couldn't possibly see and I wonder how much they heard. They stayed for the entire program though.

WESTPORT, Conn. (AP) - All the focus has been on the actor portraying the Stage Manager.
However, the real star of the Westport Country Playhouse's sold-out revival of "Our Town" is author Thornton Wilder, whose 64-year-old drama reaffirms its status as one of the great American plays of the 20th century.

I have been asked to pass along the following message:
The WEDNESDAY MATINEE of THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER (on 6/12/02 ) has been CANCELLED. There will be an evening performance, however.

The producers felt that more rehearsal and refining were necessary before opening, to give the show the very best possible look.

Those who have tickets for that performance should do the following: keep your tickets, BUT send a FAX to Lauren Yates, Company Manager with name, address, and seat site (for good measure), and request another performance. If the seats are available at that performance, FINE. If not, Lauren will advise you. The fax number is 212-764-5423.
