Blind Item: Broadway insider tongues are flapping wildly this morning...This Sunday's Times A&L -- the Broadway Spring Preview issue -- arrived in offices yesterday afternoon and there's not one mention of SWEET SMELL. Also all surprised by the length of ONE MO TIME article...

And another one:
Just so you know, THE PRODUCERS will not arrive in London before Fall 2003. CHICAGO is still going strong (actually stronger than ever) at the Aldelphi and there are no definite plans for THE PRODUCERS to replace CHICAGO.

ON STAGE AND OFF
'Color Purple' Set to Music by JESSE MCKINLEY
"First and most famously, there was the Slip Heard Round the World, wherein an unknown extra fell off the stage and into the headlines near the close of "War and Peace" at the Metropolitan Opera. The extra, Simon Deonarian, was fired. Even worse, he was accused of overacting by opera executives, no less."
(My favorite passage of the morning.)

Legit duo take center stage
Ex-First Lady Clinton on hand as Jones roasts Weisslers
Let other legit producers have a big new Broadway hit. Barry and Fran Weissler had the major casting coup of Hillary Rodham Clinton joining them for the UJA Federation gala in their honor Monday night. The New York junior senator's speech and attendance at the Pierre Hotel certainly broke the mold of the-usual-suspects guest list of every other theater fund-raiser in memory.
And lets not forget that today is Barry's birthday. He is 40.

Nat picks up pace
Randall's group moves to Off B'way home
Tony Randall's nearly moribund National Actors Theater has a new home and a new lease on life -- but it's bidding goodbye to Broadway.

CRITIC'S CHOICE | 'ELAINE STRITCH AT LIBERTY': A Production Writ Large, Like Its Subject and Star By BEN BRANTLEY

STRITCH WEAVES B'WAY MAGIC By CLIVE BARNES
SO formidable is Elaine Stritch - in appearance, voice and vibes - that she's the kind of person you might edge away from in an elevator.

Here's to the Great Lady Who Still Stops the Show by Howard Kissel
There have been persistent rumors that Elaine Stritch wants to do 10 performances a week of her one-person show, "At Liberty," but that there were fears the kind of ovations she receives might literally bring down the house.

Elaine Stritch at Liberty review by Charles Isherwood
Superlatives left over from last fall's batch of notices for Elaine Stritch's solo show may need to be pressed into service for its transfer to Broadway.

Elaine Stritch At Liberty Review by Ken Mandelbaum

The above raves for Elaine Stritch At Liberty are very well deserved (I hear rumors there's another one on Talkin' Broadway as well). The show has improved since its stint at the Public Theater, and fills out the Neil Simon Theatre perfectly. If you haven't seen it yet, you should waste no time (you only have until May 26!), and if you saw it Off-Broadway, you haven't really seen it!

Interesting item received:
blind item: The National Tour of Contact may become the London cast of Contact. As this tour is continuing on after the lead contracts are up in June, it's possible the national will be recast after contracts are up in June.

Re South Pacific in London, all talk of moving it was dropped some weeks ago. There was conversation around moving it to the Adelphi; however, Chicago is staying there until the end of the year and then the Producers is going in there.

Given Ben Brantley's negative review, it does not look like it will be coming here.
Hmmm....

Heard from Michael Portantiere at Theatermania a few minutes ago that he is having major server problems. (We've all been there!) With their focus on theater in other cities necessitating changes on their front page, people have been jittery about the future of the site. Michael assures me it is nothing. Because of this, they're a bit behind in posing some new reviews, columns, etc. Charles Nelson's column did not go up on Friday as scheduled and, partly because today is a holiday, Filichia's Monday column will not go up today. Michael is really hoping to post all of the overdue stuff tomorrow.
