A few subtle things about Broadway.com... in Ken's column reviewing the DVD LEONARD BERNSTEIN CONDUCTS "WEST SIDE STORY": THE MAKING OF THE RECORDING (Deutsche Grammophon), they have added a text link that says "BUY NOW" under the artwork to the left of the column. Although this is not a new strategy to the internet, it seems to be that Broadway.com is becoming a merchandising website, similar to the old Theatre.com. Thankfully Broadway.com does it much better. There is no truth to the rumor that you can click on Ken's name on the same page and BUY HIM as well... Also of note on Broadway.com, Sandy Kenyon's Broadway Minute has not been updated since August 30th of last year. Don't you think it is time to replace him or kill the section?

The satellite radio market for Broadway music is getting a little more crowded with the introduction of Sirius Satellite Radio's 'Broadway's Best'. Just like Broadway's own 1010WINS, 24/7 Sirius will also introduce Radio Playbill, with news headlines can now be heard throughout the day at the top of each hour, seven days a week. 'Broadway's Best' is also being streamed through the Sirius website at www.SiriusRadio.com. Breaking news will be added "day-of" as it happens. It is hosted by former Theatre.com editor, Robert Viagas, who now works for Playbill's broadcast division.

In other Playbill news, Reporter David Lefkowitz is leaving Playbill On-Line and the job has been posted. This is a full-time reporting job at Playbill with benefits. Anyone with theatre news experience and contacts is encouraged to apply.

And my last rant of the day: has anyone seen the Commercial Theater Institute's lineup of producers for the panel on producing a Broadway musical? Steven Baruch. Okay. Marty Bell. Absolutely. Hal Luftig. Sure. Lauren Mitchell. Of course. And Jordan Roth. Oh my. If you would like to attend the three day CTI intensive workshop on producing (April 26-28, $295), call Fred Vogel at 212-568-1109. You may want to ask him a question or two.

Bacon Gets Fatter: Holy Picture Extends to April 7

On this day two years ago in London... Douglas Mayo ripped off everyone who participated in a production of Sweeney Todd that was to benefit Crusaid (London's sister organization to Broadway Cares). I just want to remind everyone around the world to spit on this bastard if you see him. It seems under British law he did not do anything wrong, but we all know that he is scum of the earth.

Speaking of London, after Catherine posted her thoughts about Lauren coming back from London, I got an email saying that SOUTH PACIFIC will close at NT but have a West End transfer. I have not seen it mentioned elsewhere, although I do not keep up on London theater as much.

Well, as I said back on August 31st, 2001, Sherie Scott is woefully miscast in 'The Last Five Years.' That's somewhat fortunate, because the incredibly talented Norbert Leo Butz shines even brighter in his role when compared to Sherie. Most of the changes to the show since its Skokie incarnation worked for me, but the replacement of "I Could Be in Love With Someone Like You" is, I feel, misguided. I still feel that overall, this is JRB's best work to date, and I hope it has a long and successful run.

To help that along... Lauren Kennedy, who originated the role of Kathy in Skokie, will be back in New York in late April, after her London production of 'South Pacific' closes as scheduled. Perhaps she could be persuaded to come to the Minetta Lane?

Went to see Jason Robert Brown's new show 'The Last Five Years' yesterday. Having the advantage of seeing it in Chicago last June, I can say that the show has grown and should be a certain crowd pleaser for anyone who has ever been through a relationship. With an excellent cast and Jason on piano, it is worth the $60 top price easily. And thank you to Arielle Tepper and Marty Bell for selling $20 tickets (first and last rows) to the show to allow everyone to see this piece.
