There is no denying that he was out of control on the stage, but the audiences really ate it up. Obits are very factual, and don't really contain the important information. Isn't it interesting that the people who write obits do not really know who they are writing about? If I wrote Avery's obit, here's what I would mention. I felt that Avery was always about what he could give to anyone: laughter to the audience, knowledge and technique to his students, and his personal generousity to me and many others. WRITER 'KABUL'S TOGETHER A RARE SHOW OF POLITICS by CLIVE BARNES January 6, 2002 -- There has always been political theater. Even Shakespeare gave his history plays a Tudor slant - probably to please, or at least not displease, good Queen Bess. 'SUMMER' FLING by CHIP DEFFAA January 6, 2002 -- Ryan Driscoll, who stars as Hermie in "Summer of '42" at the Variety Arts Theater, is the only 18-year-old carrying a musical in New York. Yes, Ryan is very talented and we hope to see lots of him in the future. But carrying the musical may be generous on a few fronts. 'Summer' stands on itself and the fact that he is 18 is not remarkable, especially in light of Laura Benanti really carrying Sound of Music a few seasons ago, on Broadway with much higher stakes, nonetheless.
