No other show in New York asks the audience to earn its rewards in the manner of "The Syringa Tree," Pamela Gien's play about a girlhood spent in apartheid-riven South Africa. It's worth it.

B'WAY TAKES THE RAP
By MICHAEL RIEDEL
'HIP" is not a word you'd apply to most people who work on Broadway. So when word leaked out this week that the producers of "Top Dog/Under Dog" had lined up rapper Mos Def to star in the play on Broadway this spring, the theater world furrowed its collective brow and asked: "Mos What?"

Recording live is never ideal, and recording live in the middle of Times Square is nothing short of a miracle. Not only did they capture this event's sound, but the liner notes feature great photos by Kenneth Blauvelt and Bruce Glikas. It is a must have for Broadway fans, and CD proceeds benefit BC/EFA.

Bringing Afghanistan To Our Door
You have to give Tony Kushner points for having started a play about Afghanistan three years ago, when it was hardly at the center of anyone's consciousness, though we were bombing it in an ultimately pointless way.

TURBAN SPRAWL by DONALD LYONS
It's 1998 in Kabul, Afghanistan, and the Taliban rules with an iron fist.In the desperate, frantic world of Tony Kushner's "Homebody/Kabul," one woman is swallowed up in its depths and seems lost, while two other women struggle to get out. The men seem variously helpless and lost: Two take dope in a hotel room while one tries to smuggle out his poems in Esperanto.

Eric Krebs has gotten Langston Hughes to write a musical. Not in so many words, notes and dance steps, but the producer has reached far back into the poet and novelist's little-known work for stage, created almost 30 years before his death in 1962, and brought forth "Little Ham."

THEATER REVIEW | 'PSYCH'
Dominatrix, Nice Kid; She's Just Misunderstood by BRUCE WEBER

Whipped Into A Frenzy
To paraphrase an old joke: Sunny Goldfarb isn't paranoid, she just thinks everyone's out to get her. Then again, maybe they're not. Ambiguity abounds in "Psych," an offbeat, low-key comedy about bad things that happen to a good girl.

'PSYCH' BEYOND THERAPY

No, No, Nostalgia: Tintypes Closes Prematurely Dec. 16

The following stories come to us via The American Theater Web.

The Arizona Republic: Revised 'Little Women' turns to song and dance

Detroit Free Press: Arts grant total dips
Dips to $23.6 million, down 8%. Included in the "Arts grant" are: Detroit Institute of Arts, Henry Ford Museum & Greenfield Village, Detroit Symphony Orchestra and The Detroit Zoo. Yes, The Detroit Zoo. The Arts are so different in the Midwest. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

The Boston Globe: State budget ax spares cultural line items
$13.2 million. No mention of any zoos.

Random things: Was surfing around and found Michael Cerveris has an upcoming television series on Fox called Emma Brody. Think Alias meets Ally McBeal, only in London. For a trailer (sans Cerveris) see ZapIt...

SCHREIBER TO LIEV 'EM IN DUST By CLIVE BARNES
There are two remarkable one-person shows currently playing at the Joseph Papp Public Theater on Lafayette Street: "Elaine Stritch: At Liberty," which stars the ineffable instant legend Elaine Stritch and is headed to Broadway next February, and a play called, oddly enough, "Othello," with Liev Schreiber.

VISITOR DAY By CLAIRE SIEGEL
Time travel has become a regular thing for actress Nana Visitor, who pole-vaulted centuries to take the lead in the 1920s musical "Chicago" after having played a deep-space alien for seven years on TV.
