We're sorry, it's obviously a slow news day.

On this date in 1992, William Jefferson Clinton was elected the 42nd president of the United States, defeating President Bush. And in 1998, Former pro wrestler Jesse ''The Body'' Ventura was elected governor of Minnesota. Which reminds me - go out and vote on Tuesday, all you New Yorkers. We've got an election! Today's birthdays include: Charles Bronson, Lois Smith, Dennis Miller, John Barry, Michael Dukakis, Kathy Kinney, Dolph Lundgren and Adam Ant.

McCutcheon Will Not Return to My Fair Lady
Despite confirmed reports that Martine McCutcheon would stay in My Fair Lady through December 8, the actress is actually never coming back to the musical. McCutcheon quit the production rather than risk permanent damage to her ailing voice, according to The Evening Standard.
Wasn't she seen lunching with Craig and Nathan... oh, nevermind.

Tangentially, the staff would like to add that the Yankees had better win on Saturday, because I have tickets to the Lane-less 'Producers' on Sunday night (Actor's Fund performance), and I would hate to bring a radio to the theatre with me.

NATHAN LANE CAN'T PRODUCE by MICHAEL RIEDEL
NATHAN Lane, the Tony Award-winning star of "The Producers," appears to have developed a polyp on his vocal chord and will be out of the hit show indefinitely, his spokesman said yesterday.

This must be big news. How often does the NYTimes and NYPost have the same Friday column? Also, check out Riedel's story because it also talks about Frank Langella's reasons for leaving the London production of Over the Moon (Moon Over Buffalo). Seems that Joan Collins was upstaging him with over-the-top acting. It brings the term Present Laughter to my mind. And you would think that Frank would be used to being upstaged by strong women...

One way or the other, Mel Brooks will see the money. As a producer of "The Producers," Brooks is part of one of four general partnerships that have formed Broadway Inner Circle, which is set to charge an $80 broker's fee on the hit musical's new $400 ticket.

LITTLE REASON FOR LAUGHS IN 'WONDER' by DONALD LYONS
FARCE has to be grounded in reality. That way, when it takes off from reality, we're anchored. Christopher Durang understood this in "Betty's Summer Vacation"; Michael Frayn, whose "Noises Off" is on Broadway now, knows the need for stage discipline to be established to offset backstage chaos.

There may be changes ahead for the Prince Music Theater. The company, which picked up three Barrymores this year and recently closed a well-received revival of Lady in the Dark, has had some staffing changes, and there is a question as to how the theater will operate in the future.

The BroadwayStars staff is happy that the Yankees have rallied to take the lead in the series, but we are also hoping the that next game can be won in the normal 9 innings. Although half the staff is unemployed, and the other half is about to quit or be fired, we do need our beauty rest! Go Yankees!!!

So you read it here first, BroadwayOnline.com is... officially not doing today what it was doing yesterday. There is a rotating "best of" for each of the sections, but it is unlikely that the site will have new content. Robert Viagas wrote his goodbye column (Matthew linked to it below.) And the staff is not in the office today. Broadway Television Network has not released a statement about the demise of this business unit, strikingly similar to the way in which InTheater just disappeared in denial. Just like InTheater did, BTN has a plan to re-open BroadwayOnline.com with a white knight, but I don't see that happening at this point. We are very sad. But it looks like all of our favorite players will resurface very soon at familiar outlets. (Peter Filichia will kick off at TheaterMania on Monday!) It will be just like they went on vacation and got a new haircut. BroadwayStars will continue to link to BroadwayOnline stories until it doesn't make sense (if the site goes dead, they make a major restructure of the content, etc...)

Been listening to Danny Zolli's new CD. It is really well produced and shows Danny's range, not only in notes (which is exceptional) but also from rock and roll to musical theatre. It would be a perfect addition to any fan of the rock musical set. Danny's self-produced CD would hold up against any major label release. It is that good. For more information about it or to buy it, see Danny's site at www.dannyzolli.com.

Today is suppose to be D-Day for BroadwayOnline.com. It is strange that other than a few columnists announcing that they are moving on, we have not really heard anything official from the owners (Broadway Television Network). Does this reflect upon their other business practices? I guess it does. We will just have to wait and see if there is new content on BroadwayOnline.com tomorrow for our answer.

Sherie Rene Scott puts on a costume today, but it is not for Halloween as she opens up the 1 week workshop of Debbie Does Dallas, the musical from this year's Fringe. The workshop is capped by a presentation next Wednesday.

And this from our anonymous blind link:
LOVE, JANIS posted its closing notice last night and will perform its final performance at the Village Theatre on Sunday, November 5th at 7:30pm. The show has mounted a debt of $500,000 (yes, half a million)! Checks are reportedly bouncing.
Got a note from a friend that owns a professional design firm that has been in business for 8 years. They are heavily in the corporate market but are looking to get into the Broadway/Film market. The do mostly concept/branding and print and are looking for companies/projects to work on. Small companies with little to no money are encouraged to apply. It is not about money right now, it is about building a relationship. Email me for further info.

Dracula, the Musical,La Jolla Playhouse; 492 seats; $65 top, by Steven Oxman
Should Frank Wildhorn ever decide to retire from turning 18th and 19th century popular literature into popular but forgettable Broadway fare, he'd make a terrific studio executive. He seems to understand that, in commercial terms, the branding and packaging of a product can be even more important than its substance.
