I bet you didn't know I won a gold medal in figure skating at the Winter Olympics. I'll let you figure out what year. I know, I know, what does this have to do with theatre? Absolutely nothing, although, I bet we could find a few actors and producers who have some interesting pasts, all made up of course. Fans $kipping Rock's Big Gigs Music fans fed up with the skyrocketing prices of concert tickets are turning their backs on their favorite performers and boycotting their shows. I don't think that this is actually the case. Rock concerts for the most part are the same form of entertainment, albeit in a different market, as the Broadway show. What is happening is that the economy has turned and people are doing less expensive things. People would still like to go to their shows, it is just that they can't afford them. So using the word "boycott" is not really accurate. These forms of entertainment meet a price point. In order to analyze this correctly, you have to look at the whole market. Madonna fans are not boycotting her shows. They are all sold out at a top ticket price. No one is boycotting The Producers or Lion King, both at the top of the scale too. It is because these three different events marketing message give the perception of getting more for your money than the others. These are not the days of wine and roses. And it has to suck to be Clear Channel (SFX) right now. Buzz Lines: Does the death of Kathleen Freeman mirror the slow demise of the belief that "the show must go on?"
