This will change, all things do, but now is not the time to expect the Baby Boomers to embrace the unexpected; it's simply not good economics, in their way of thinking." The Jane Street address was not selected randomly by "The Producers" team. It's where you'll find the real-life home of Thomas Meehan, who co-wrote the musical's script with Mel Brooks. And it's not the only coy allusion in that show or others on the Great White Way. Such inside jokes are remarkably common among Broadway directors, writers and producers. THE FRINGE BENEFITS The pay-per-pee musical "Urinetown" didn't sound like anybody's idea of a Broadway hit two years ago, despite the sellout crowds that saw it performed during the New York Fringe Festival. But now, "Urinetown," a musical about a place where it's no longer free to pee, is on its way to the Henry Miller Theater - and more eyes than ever are on the fifth annual Fringe. GRIMLY HILARIOUS, PINTER HONORED AS ONE OF THE GREAT DRAMATISTS OF THE 20TH CENTURY The extraordinary two-week Harold Pinter Festival that concluded last week at Lincon Center was remarkable for many reasons, most notably for reminding us how beautifully crafted his plays are - heaven-sent gifts for actors and directors. We've calculated the odds, and rated the shows' buzz and "Fringiness" on a scale of 1 to 10 It's theatre day at The Post! Eric Grode's STAGE TO SCREEN: Papp Goes the Hansel Joseph Papp was many things in his lifetime visionary, tyrant, activist, nurturer, pain in the ass. And now hes a trend. Entertainment Weekly famously adheres to the rule that all you need is three similar things to have a trend. Once three movies come out about the Wild West, for example, Westerns are a trend. (To be fair, EW has shied away from the frantic trend-spotting in recent years, but it used to be constant.) Anyway, the man who created the New York Shakespeare Festival and, by extension, much of what we call off-Broadway is the subject of no less than four recent projects. We have a trend! posted at 8/5/2001 09:55:41 AM by Susan Heim | Item Link Today's birthdays include Neil Armstrong, Loni Anderson, Maureen McCormick, Jonathan Silverman, and John Huston.
