Beautiful Game and By Jeeves Expected for North America in 2002

WEST SIDE GLORY
Things to do when you are not in the theatre!

The Toronto Star Tina to bite the Big Apple by Richard Ouzounian
When she stands alone on the stage of the Winter Garden Theatre Oct. 18 and begins the show by singing the words "I have a dream," Maddigan will also undoubtedly be thinking about how sometimes those dreams do come true.
Great headline from last week, charming little story about Tina Maddigan. The funniest part, "That's an understatement when you consider that only four years ago, Maddigan was so far down the showbiz ladder that she paid another actor $100 to get his place in line at an audition for Les Misrables."

Haines Goes His Way
Producer Bruce Kimmel, who deserves major credit for putting his money where his heart is in his recordings of cast albums, solo albums, forgotten showtunes, and rare reissues, has been winking at us for some time, slipping in "faceless" crooner Guy Haines for a number or two on many albums for his former Varese Sarabande Spotlight Series. Now comes Haines' solo debut, singing an unusual collection of theatre and pop songs.

Garth Drabinsky-Produced Island Returning to London Jan. 14, 2002
I found this amusing, especially when they called Garth, "the fugitive Broadway impresario."
My boycott of Broadway Online has ended for now, I no longer get those annoying new windows of advertising whenever I click on an article. Thank you ever so much!

Smiles of a Summer Night
The 'Night Music' concert in PA last night was wonderful - we thoroughly enjoyed it. Rumor has it that Sondheim was there to check out Irene Worth's performance. Perhaps she'll repeat her role in DC next summer? And Marc Kudisch was perfectly cast as Carl-Magnus, in spite of, or perhaps because of, this past week's comments.

Jim Caruso is...Prying!
Nana Visitor, Daisy Prince, and Amanda Green on parental inspiration.
Don't forget to check out Green's show at Second Stage on Monday the 16th, 8pm, $25.It will have Brooks Ashmanskas, from whom I bummed a cigarette at Cooper Union, before I quit, which makes him wonderful.

This is a blatant plug for a theatre group I work with, LITE:

Hey friends, it's the season once again for your favorite New York tradition, free Shakespeare in the park!

Come frolic with the fireflies on the great lawn at Prospect Park's picturesque Tennis House, while the Rude Mechanicals, the even ruder Fairies, and those wild and crazy Lovers, come together to present one of Shakespeare's greatest hits, A Midsummer Night's Dream!

Don't settle for less! Come early and often! Bring a blanket and take a nap! Bring a picnic and clean up your trash! Bring your friends! Bring your family! Bring your neighbors' kids! Bring your super! Bring your boss! Bring everybody you've ever met!

Every Thursday and Friday evening at 7pm, and every Sunday at 2pm and 5pm, from now til August 12th! Don't miss it!

Ex-Menudo Kid Sues Gizmo Store
A former member of the Latin pop group Menudo claims a massage-chair mishap at a Sharper Image store had him seeing double.
While Gomez was in the vibrating chair, a number of boxes that were stored on a shelf above him "violently tumbled downwards," hitting him "on and about his head," the suit says.

The head injuries affected the 26-year-old Gomez for "at least a year," and came just as he was set to launch his solo singing career, she added.
Boxes falling on his head? 1998? It all makes sense now. That is why Ruben agreed to do Bob Cabell's most horrendous musical recording of "Z - The Masked Musical!". He should sue for that as well. Talk about a career ender.

Tuneful Bow To Bernstein
If Tuesday's 37th annual New York Philharmonic opener in the park had a theme song, it was "Tonight."In the shadow of Leonard Bernstein's Central Park West home, in a concert in his honor on the Great Lawn, with one of the greatest bands in the land, it wasn't just any night, it was pure New York, New York - indomitable, proud and inspired.

Don't Even Bother Looking For The 'Money' by Donald Lyons
'Where's My Money?" is a dream of a play. The trouble is, is it's a bad dream.Writer/director John Patrick Shanley, who won an Oscar for "Moonstruck," has apparently soured on marriage and on people, judging from this farce.
Mr. Lyons reviews three shows in his column and went on to call Once Around the City "The worst musical in the history of the human race..." Now there is a pull-quote for The Times ad! I wonder if Mr. Lyons will get the same email that Adam Feldman will surely get today?

For people who are sending us "Blind Items":
This is our every-so-often pep talk about "blind items" that are submitted to us through the link on your left. Do not send press releases masked as "buzz" through the blind items, it is tacky. We don't run them, AND then we don't look kindly upon your show. Please do not use the blind item to try and take on a personal crusade against BTN because your J&H DVD did not arrive. No one cares. All 15 people who bought the DVD would have been better served by getting a free private performance of J&H in their parents house. Perhaps N*Sync could open for J&H. And accusing BroadwayStars of not having integrity (when did I *ever* say we had integrity!) is not the way to make us take up the cause. And no, we have no financial ties to BTN. I think we actually may have more cash-flow then them. On other notes, we do not care who is sleeping with whom, who has what sexually transmitted disease, and what you really think of us. This is not the place for personal attacks (well, at least ones that can get us sued) and if you don't like our website, go somewhere else. Is it really that hard? And BTW, it is especially tacky to try and flood our blind items mailbox with the same information pretending to be from multiple people... do you really think that the technology does not tell us who the sender is? Blind Items are really not too blind. They just allow for deniability.

On this date in 1932, MGM's "Freaks" directed by Tod Browning opened at the Rialto. This movie exploited the shock value of real people with severe disabilities. Studio head Louis B. Mayer was appalled while critics and moviegoers felt the same way. It was withdrawn and rereleased as "Nature's Mistakes". In 1997, Bill Russell and Henry Krieger wrote "Side Show". In 2001, theOtherJames and I argued about whether to put the period inside the quotation mark or outside.
