Saturday, June 23, 2001 THE PLAY'S THEIR THING Kenneth Lonergan and Rebecca Gilman started the same way as teenagers in a program called Young Playwrights Inc. Founded 20 years ago by Broadway great Stephen Sondheim, the free program gives promising high school students a chance to meet weekly in playwriting workshops. But the most exciting part of the program, hands down, comes when the kids' own work is staged and this year's reading, open to the public, is Monday. posted at 6/23/2001 01:49:21 PM by Susan Heim | Item Link Today's birthdays include Frances McDormand, Irene Worth, James Levine, Jean Anouilh, and Bob Fosse. The site may be a little (a lot?) unstable beyond the first page. I am going to be working on making the site work today, so there won't be an update by me. Some observations and comments about it: BC/EFA may have the best production team in the business -- problem solvers and not one single attitude. It was great to witness such a wonderful project... During the load-in of the stage platforms (built at Hudson), a few of them were marked "Bells Are Ringing" which caused a few snickers and comments... Jerry Mitchell should be the next Energizer Bunny... and finally, Kim Grigsby can really conduct! It is *such* a hookey day. If you need me, I will be in Central Park... Other comments for the smart people who find this: If you can't have the conductor, the Lighting/Electrician tech-grrrls really do it for me! Also a little self knowledge: when you find yourself in the presence of beautiful naked people and you can only think about sleep, it is time to go home!
