The First Thing We Do, Let's Hire All the Lawyers
This witty little Friday afternoon article was pointed out to me by left coast reader David L. Hobbs. Mr. Hobbs would like to remind Mr. Reidel that Summer of '42 will open in Mountain View, CA... not Palo Alto, CA... but what the hey, it's only five miles difference.

Spike To Direct 'Rent'? by Michael Reidel
The movie version of "Rent" is starting to come together, and Spike Lee may land in the director's chair. An enormous fan of Jonathan Larson's hit musical - he's seen it several times - Lee is "in discussions" with Miramax Films about directing the movie, a Miramax representative said yesterday.
I think that is an excellent choice. Reidel also mentions that Mitchell Maxwell's producing problems with Bell Are Ringing may affect his upcoming production of Summer of '42. We hear that the pre-B'way "Summer of '42" - originally planned for three stops prior to NYC - will most likely only make it (barely) to the first city. The other two stops will be scrapped.

Attendance was also down significantly. It fell by 12.8% to 225,151.

Thesp returns to stage with Sternheim's dark comedy
Steve Martin returns to the theater with an adaptation of Carl Sternheim's 1911 dark comedy "The Underpants" (Die Hose), commissioned by Gotham's Classic Stage Company in New York.

Regarding the "salad days" query, I received many answers. (What a well read group you are!) It was explained to me by my favorite Canadian columnist (Richard Ouzounian) that:
In ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA. Cleo refers to:
    "My salad days,
When I was green in judgment: cold in blood."

There's also a larky Julain Slade musical witht he same name. Big brit hit.

    Bottom line: "in my youth".
Okay, word around town is that the Natasha Richardson return to Cabaret may be a no go. it is said that she wants to return with the original cast, which may not be possible. Stay tuned.... NY Post boy-Friday, Michael Reidel, will be at Seth's Chatterbox this afternoon... I mention this because rumor has it that he may... uh... SING a duet with Paige Price? Well, we must go to Mama's to see for ourselves. And besides, all proceeds go to BC/EFA. (Actually, I made that up in honor of the New York Post. But they will both be there.)

And in historical news, on this day in 1886, the rather mad King Ludwig II of Bavaria is found drowned in a shallow pool of water. The freshly deposed king was in house arrest after a coup d'etat by his uncle, Prince Luitpold von Bayern. It is not clear whether his death was a result of murder or suicide.
August Wilson did not write a play about this event.

And on June 13th, 1920, the US Post Office rules that children may not be sent via Parcel Post.
