Broadway's Electric Conductors
One aspect of musical theater is sometimes taken for granted: the contribution of live musicians. But that's changing as more conductors have time in the spotlight
What a great (huge!) picture of Grigsby on the front cover of the Weekend section! I've said it before, "We love Grigsby". We have loved her since her days of "Joseph" at the Helen Hayes Performing Arts Center right in my backyard. We always knew she would be a Broadway Star.

And this message brought to you by the producer, but not The Producers...
You may notice a slight difference in BroadwayStars this morning. The front page of the site now has only today's news. All other news can be found by the search engine on your left or by clicking the [archive] link at the bottom of the news pages. You know the saying, "Success is going to kill you?" Well, success is killing us. Thanks to all of you telling your friends about this site, it has grown beyond the ability of our server and bandwidth. Over the next few weeks we will be trying a few different solutions, so things may be bumpy. Please feel free to chime in with your opinions or let us know when something is just not working. Thanks.

In other news... Will Alan Cumming come back and close Cabaret with Natasha Richardson a la Miss Saigon closing return cast of Lea Salonga and Jonathan Price? We hear it is a possibility...

Martin Beck is being discussed for projects... will Kiss Me Kate be gone in September? And how about that Imperial. Although Les Miz has been rumored to be on death kneel a few times, will March 2002 be it's last one day more? And just to sweep the British Mega Musicals of the 80s, Phantom numbers are not what they used to be as well...

Tony's Real Winners & Losers by Michael Riedel
Theater sources said "Bells" would close Sunday, at a loss of more than $7 million. Its producers were unavailable for comment yesterday.

"A Class Act," the pocket-size musical about the late lyricist Ed Kleban, will also close on Sunday, its producer, Chase Mishkin, said yesterday.
It was also mentioned in this article that The Producers did $1.6 million in biz... yesterday alone!

Today's birthdays include: Spalding Gray.

The Tony award-winning actress Kristin Chenoweth demonstrates her talents and lovability in an otherwise expendable sitcom.
After seeing the first three episodes, I can tell you that the show "Kristin" makes Fame look like Shakespeare. What a shame for a wonderfully talented actor. Hopefully this means we will see her again on Broadway soon. I give the show six episodes.

Chetan picked all but one Tony winner correctly [Chetan voted for Director of a Play, Jack OBrien, The Invention of Love]. The other three who also got 20 of 21 correct answers are: Maria DeLuca [Featured Actor in a Musical, Brad Oscar, The Producers], Chris Reichheld [Score, David Yazbek (music & lyrics), The Full Monty] and Adam Siegel [Director of a Play, Jack OBrien, The Invention of Love].
