That was Playbill Online and Broadway.com as they looked at the new Broadwayonline.com (nee: Theatre.com). How unfortunate of a redesign, to wait so long for that. I know I should talk, but hell, my site is a non-profit without the 501-C-3. One may ask why the name change as well. Theatre.com pretty much said it all. Unfortunately Theater.com said Broadway.com. The "er" domain is owned by Hollywood Media which owns Broadway.com and theatre fans (mostly from New Mexico) were typing Theater.com into their browser and ending up at Broadway.com. This lack of securing the accidental domain was taking some of the traffic away from the "re" site. And on the web, traffic equates to money. Anyway, with all that said, it must be said that Broadwayonline.com has planned the most comprehensive theatre fan site. Planned is the key word in that sentence. Execution is still lacking. A splash page at the top of the site with an embedded Flash file crashes many people. Over at Talkin'Broadway, a member of the chatterati has abtly nicknamed the redesign Theatre.suck. (I think Mark Bakalor already owns that domain...) The search engine works better than any of the other sites reporting on theatre. There are parts of the site that are impressive content-wise such as long running shows, time warp, and other interesting statistic oriented pages. The tough part? It is a lot of work to keep those pages current. On the design side, frames are so 90s. I don't think I can find a major site in any industry that is using frames. Also, there is too much flash/java/rollover stuff which makes the site load slowly. I'd imagine that the annoying banner at the top of the site that now has a plane skywriting a welcome message will be replaced by a banner ad that will refresh, thereby slowing the load process as well. You would think that since the Broadwayonline.com offices are located in the "Heart of Silicon Alley" (their proclamation, not mine), they could have put together a user interface and useability study. If they did, they need to get their money back. I am sorry to be so negative about this because they really have such potential. Where else can you find Peter Filichia, Michael Buckley and Robert Viagas... just to name a few of the gems there. posted at 5/30/2001 09:57:53 AM by James Marino | Item Link On this day in 1909, Benny Goodman, the American jazz clarinetist and orchestra leader, was born. On ths day in 1593, playwright Christoper Marlowe is killed at Bull's Tavern in Deptford, by Ingram Frizer. It might have been a bar brawl, or murder, but no motive was ever uncovered. Fields and William Wellman stole Barrymore's corpse from the funeral parlor and sat it up in his usual position at the poker table to scare the hell out of Errol Flynn. There were some very angry theatregoers, more than a few of whom wanted their tickets refunded. This, of course, worked out well for those in the cancellation line, including me. Rest assured, however, that if Lane is out when you go to see the show, you will have nothing to fear. Understudy Ray Wills gave an excellent performance in Lane's place.
