Jett-Propelled Exit by Michael Reidel
Backstage at the "The Rocky Horror Show," cast members are wondering if rocker Joan Jett will ever do the Time Warp again. Jett, who made her Broadway debut in the Tony-nominated revival, bolted the show in a huff last week and has not been seen at the theater since.
Let me repeat... Jett's exit is the best thing that has happened to Broadway in years. And that Kenny Laguna asshole? Glad he is gone too. No wonder Jett and Laguna work so well together.

Happy long weekend! I hear that 3hree just landed their house for next season and will announce a fall date soon...

How does Broadway affect the regionals? Look at what is happening up in East Haddam -- a directorial shuffle. They All Laughed: John Rando out, Chris Ashley in. Apparently, A Thousand Clowns wants his full attention, and he chose to stick with that...

Revisited Rocky Horror yesterday. Listening to the CD made me want to see it again. Two items of note, Kristen Lee Kelly seems to have taken over the Joan Jett role for now. And Sebastian LaCause is now back to his normal color hair. ("I've been making a man, with... dark hair, and a tan...") When did that happen? And why? :-)

Went to the Paper Mill preview of Carousel yesterday at 890 (as Catherine mentioned yesterday). The creative team has put together a great cast. As only Paper Mill can do it, a cast of thousands and I am sure that the production values will be as lavish as anything we have seen out in Milburn. Anyway, you get all that... what I am getting to is that Paper Mill presented a few songs and scenes, including the famous "Bench Scene" (AKA: the best musical theatre scene ever written) and there were a handful of video cameras there. I am sure that you will be able to find the video on Broadway.com very soon. It will also be available on Broadway Beat and eBay... just kidding.

So, how about Jane Eyre? How can you help but admire the way the producers and composer Paul Gordon are handling the situation? In addition, the theatre fans on the Internet (particularly on All That Chat!) are rallying behind them, trying to turn things around, whatever their feelings about the show may be. This is what a theatre community truly should be. Will they prevail, though? Time will tell, but I'll imagine we'll hear soon!

Broadway Vet Francis Ruivivar Dead at 40
Francis Ruivivar, a veteran Broadway performer who made Broadway history as the first Asian-American actor to play the role of The Engineer in Miss Saigon, died on May 23 at the age of 40. He had been battling leukemia.

Well, let me just say that I was impressed by Matt Bogart's Billy Bigelow at this morning's press rehearsal of Carousel, which begins performances on May 30th. He sure does brood well. The cast performed three songs and one scene from the show, and it looks like a winner. 'Carousel' being one of my favorite shows has nothing to do with how much I enjoyed the rehearsal.

Robert Goulet to Star in 'South Pacific' Revival.
You know, what we need is a really good production of 'Carousel'.

Neil Simon's '45 Seconds' Sets Broadway Date.
Joan Copeland, Harry Goz, Bill Moor, Marian Seldes and Lewis J. Stadlen will star in Neil Simons '45 Seconds from Broadway'. The new play, directed by Jerry Zaks, will begin previews on October 16 and open on November 7 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.

Faith Prince Rings Those 'Bells'
And don't forget that the cast recording of 'Bells are Ringing' is due out June 26th from Fynsworth Alley.
I know my birthday is on the June 28th, and you're all wondering what to get me, but please, don't get me the CD. I already have a recording!

A 'Nest' of Chicago: Steppenwolf Looks at McMurphy .
Steppenwolf Theatre Company founders Terry Kinney and Gary Sinise tell how they came to be director and star, respectively, of the current Broadway production of 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest'.

Broadway Bares XI Is Strip Odyssey with Busch, Cumming June 17.
What a great headline, but ever since I heard the Broadwaystars.com staff wouldn't be performing, I'll have to miss this one.

Massacre on 'Sesame Street'
SESAME Workshop, the company that produces 'Sesame Street', suddenly laid off about 70 people yesterday - 20 percent of its workforce.

The fans didn't get it. Brad Grey, executive producer of "The Sopranos," says he's surprised that fans of the mob opera were disappointed by the season finale.
This one's for you, Marino.

And on a personal note, this is how I am going to grow old - alone and with 171 cats. Scary world sometimes.

What a weekend. I think that The Producers were on stage more than Lily Tomlin at last night's Drama Desk Awards. If it is any indication of the temperature of the Tony Awards (which it usually is), the Big Show in June should not be a surprise to anyone...

What was a huge (pleasant) surprise is the new recording of Jordan Roth's Rocky Horror Show. Wow. I can't get it out of my CD player. Jeffrey Lesser and Billy Rosenfield have succeeded in capturing a live performance in the studio. The talent as we knew is outstanding and the recording could not have been produced any better. Although I don't see a Tony in this show's future, I definitely see a Grammy. (On the other hand the math of a split Producers vote could end up with Tom Hewitt holding a prize, which is a better performance than Nathan and Matthew anyway.) This CD is a must have for those who are fans of the rock musical. (In case you have been putting off seeing Rocky, there is a 2 for 1 ticket special. Call 212-947-8844 and give code: "RH2for1" or print this page and bring it to the box office.)

Spotted at The Producers on Saturday night: Al and Tipper Gore, Alan Greenspan, Andrea Mitchell and Kirk Douglas. Nathan Lane said hello from the stage, "Hey, Al Gore!" and gave a thumbs-up.

Talk of the town this weekend was that Faith Prince was extremely pleased with the substantial raise that Michael Reidel gave her in his column last week...

On this day in 1892, The opera "I Pagliacci," by Ruggiero Leoncavallo, was first performed, in Milan, Italy. On this day in 1959, The musical "Gypsy," inspired by the life of stripper Gypsy Rose Lee, opened on Broadway. Today's birthdays include: Mr. T, Judge Reinhold, Edwin Christy, Henri Rousseau and Fats Waller.

"The Producers' Dominates Drama Desk Awards, With 11
