I must be getting old because an ice cream cone was $1 at the Creamery... posted at 5/18/2001 09:49:30 AM by James Marino | Item Link Thursday, May 17, 2001 You oughta know... that the 2001 BroadwayStars.com Tony Award Contest is now live (unlike The Producers website)... I never imagined such a fallout as we have had post the nomination announcement. The closing notices of the past few days are the kind of events that we have come to expect in the first week of June. Have the producers become more realistic or has the money supply become tighter? I don't know. I mentioned on March 21 of this year that the first victim of the economic downturn was off-Broadway. It now seems that the money crunch has made its way to Broadway. Producers without as much easy access to capital are preserving investor's money for another day (i.e. their next project). The other possibility is that the mega-hit musical, The Producers, is being viewed as such a unstoppable train that it did not make sense for borderline shows to stay open the extra weeks till the Tonys and just lose anyway. I don't really subscribe to that notion. People who work on bringing shows to Broadway, from the new kids like Jordan Roth and Arielle Tepper all the way to legendary pros like Roger Berlind and Fran Weissler, are all dreamers. They believe that their shows can win -- and thank God they believe that. I listened to Marty Bell last week as he talked about how A Class Act came to be a show and how it was simply a shear feat of will power to produce a show for his friend (Ed Kleban). This is a show born of passion by the writers and producers. The fact that it has struck a chord with so many people in the industry is a testament to this. We should salute everyone who has brought us a show this season -- including the writers to the directors to the actors to the designers to the GMs to the Company Managers to the Press Reps to the musicians and everyone else involved in the process -- "Bravo!" and thank you. Jed Bernstein said at last year's Tony Awards that Broadway is a community of people who do not know each other. He encouraged everyone in the theatre community to shake one another's hand in a show of support of friendship in the industry. I know that for the most part, this is the norm. Broadway casts support other Broadway casts. The producers are not afraid to call each other to partner or to say hello. The missing part? The fans. I have seen all over the internet newsgroups and message boards fans arguing that a show didn't deserve to be on Broadway and taking those attacks very personal. It's time to pull together as the world will be watching the Broadway community in the coming weeks.
