I refuse to be left out in the cold about this. If all of the other columnists get to talk about their hair color, so do I, darn it! It's brown, and I'm proud of it! I don't think I'd look good as a blond, personally. Boy, that was every bit as exciting as I'd hoped it would be. I'm writing this while lying on the floor in my apartment. I don't have a laptop, but I do have a really good DSL connection, so that makes up for it. As for water, I think I'm going to go drink some right now. It's hot in here.

The Toronto Star Listening to Producers almost like being there by Richard Ouzounian

The Mystery of Edwin Drood
This was posted on RATM, thought some of you may be interested, from Richard Ouzounian of The Toronto Star.......I'm researching a newspaper article for the Toronto STAR, because our neighboring Shaw Festival is producing DROOD this summer. Has anyone been in it? Any stories, anecdotes, etc.? Who did people usually vote for at the end? You can e-mail me at work if you like, rather than clogging up the forum.
Thanks in advance.

I'm currently sitting here on the couch, with my PowerBook on my lap posting to this board. I just returned from a Little League game, where the dads needed to lighten up a bit, afterall, it's not the Broadway Softball League. No theatre here tonight. A week from today I will be seeing The Producers. My hair will never be blonde, it's naturally redish brown and I continue to reject the idea of those blonde highlights that have become so popular. I am stubborn that way. The only body of water I've been near is the puddle I jumped over in the parking lot at the ball game! And yes, we are all comedians in training or NOT!

James, as a former blonde, I can tell you, it isn't that much fun!

In sad news, Douglas Adams, author of the 'Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' has died of a heart attack at age 49.

This is being posted from my laptop, as I sit in my bed, having just returned home from a long, sweaty skate in Central Park, where I injured my elbow in a collision with a small child. No theatre news from this end. My hair is still brown, and the only body of water I'm going to be near is my shower, in about a minute.

INFINITE JOY: THE SONGS OF WILLIAM FINN (RCA Victor) by Ken Mandelbaum
I was lucky enough to see one of the concerts and to sit between Mary Testa and Chip Zien

Had the opportunity to see Seussical again last night, supposedly to let me neice see Aaron Carter as part of his one week extension. He was out last night, and patrons were not happy. We had a great time, especially watching my neice's toothless grin. And we think Janine LaManna was robbed of her Tony (nomination). (And some of us think Flaherty and Ahrens deserved a nod too.)

The print edition of Entertainment Weekly has an analysis of the Tony nominations, but opted to only list the nominations on its site.

Check out CUNY TV this weekend, if you can find it, for the American Theater Wing's Working in the Theater. This week features Mel Brooks, Susan Stroman, Thomas Meehan, and other members of The Producers team, including one of its producers. Please help this production - they need the publicity.

Right now I am writing to you fusing a modem that disconnects every five minutes. Ahhh... technology can connect me to the internet from the middle of a body of water, but it cannot keep my hair.

Well, although we had a few BroadwayStars at Central Park "reporting" on the Broadway Show League kickoff, one little story escaped us -- The "A Class Act/Allergist's Wife" team had a major injury. Danny Burstein (Left Field/Ed Standby) broke his ankle running for a foul ball. Some of the comments we heard about the injury:
    "It was hideous."
"He had surgery Thursday to put a pin in it."
    "I hope Lonny's healthy."
    "Poor Danny."
    "He was really in pain."
Well at least those reviews were better than Tom Sawyer. In other news I hear there is a major change at Playbill.com... and Theatre.com...

I hope you are all well and thanks to everybody for keeping the website current. Right now I am writing to you from a wireless PDA. Ahhh... technology can connect me to the internet from the middle of a body of water, but it cannot keep my hair one color. - Your New Blonde Friend...

Dreyfuss and Mason Take NYC Barnes and Noble Prisoner May 11. I have had a crush on Richard Dreyfuss ever since 1980's 'The Competition.' You know where I'll be tonight.

Speaking of the Broadway Softball League, I ran into another BroadwayStars.com correspondant at the season opener yesterday. The quartet from 'The Music Man' performed a beautiful rendition of the Star Spangled Banner, which would have been better if the cast of 'Riverdance' behind us had been a little quieter. Well, it isn't their national anthem, I suppose. We checked out the casts of 'Aida', 'The Producers' (surrounded by the papparazzi), 'Rent', 'The Full Monty', 'Cuckoo's Nest', 'Stones in His Pockets'/'The Dinner Party' (somehow I completely missed Henry Winkler stretching right in front of us), and the team from Equity/Playwright's Horizons. Totally enjoyable afternoon, the rest of which I spent rollerblading the loop in Central Park and working on my sunburn.

And Patrick Wilson in a baseball jersey - yum!

Philadelphia City Paper The Tao of Steve
Why is it that Stephen Sondheim inflames the passions of musical theater fans more than any other composer?
Interesting article on Sondheim fans. Thanks to Tim for all of this information!

Philadelphia City Paper I Was There, You Werent
A game of oneupsmanship. For Sondheim mavens, its not enough to have seen every show (or every show several times over). Certain rare events, witnessed by only a privileged few, have special cachet. How many of these have you seen?

Philadelphia City Paper He Wuz Robbed!Sondheim has won eight Tony Awards. Still, loyal fans are just as likely to remember the awards he and his musicals have lost.

Philadelphia City Paper Cast Your Own Follies
A favorite party game among Sondheim enthusiasts is creating imaginary casts some plausible, some wishful, some ludicrous for Follies. These lists circulate widely over the Internet, picking up momentum and sometimes causing fights.
It's just a Sondheim day! I really just like to write in purple.

Producer Bell Wants To "Weisslerize" A Class Act

As an addendum to my minor rant below, it's possible this is less negative than it first appeared. The article indicates the changes will not go into effect until after the Tonys, giving everyone plenty of time to see the current, almost perfect cast. And Bell's reasons for replacing Price, Bullock, and Anderson are sound and understandable. I hope, though, he doesn't really Weisslerize the show, but instead looks for stars who, besides encouraging attendance, are up to the acting and singing demands of the roles, and will not make a mockery of the show.

So, how about those Tony nominations? Though 15 of the nominations weren't that big of a surprise, there were a few selections (and omissions) that were unexpected. Regardless, June 3 will be a very interesting day this year. There is one thing I feel the need to mention. After the nominations were announced, three shows--The Gathering, Judgment at Nuremberg, and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer--announced a closing date of May 13. One show, however, announced something else that is, in its way, even scarier, but was not widely reported:

Marty Bell: Time to Weisslerize A CLASS ACT

The TB post mentions this article that discusses how Bell, the producer of the show, is planning to recast the show with "stars," with the exception of Tony nominee Randy Graff. While A Class Act is my favorite show of the season, I find this move sad and unfortunate. I wish that everyone could see the show, and while I understand the importance of drawing audiences, this is a move I simply wish they wouldn't take. My recommendation is to try to get to the Ambassador before the changes take place--the current cast is almost perfect, and certainly not to be missed.

Blind item received: 'Tom Sawyer' to hang up his fishin' pole this Sunday, 5/13. I wonder what effect the nominations will have on other struggling shows - 'Seussical' and 'A Class Act' being two very different examples.

Well, here's one answer: PBOL reports that 'The Gathering' will close on Sunday, 5/13.

Regarding the comment below, I was wrong, so I'm correcting myself. I just got an email from the Editorial Director at Broadway.com. This is what he said, "Company received 14 nominations. The Tony Award record books have frequently said there was a separate category for Producer of a Musical, which is an error." Not only did I read the 15 nominations information on the Tonys site, I also heard it on several news programs (they probably got it from the Tonys site as well). So, I stand corrected, "The Producers" broke a record for Tony nominations! My apologies to Broadway.com.

'The Producers' Receives 15 Tony Nominations
There was some confusion involving the previous record holder for most Tony nominations. For 30 years, it was thought that ``Company,'' the Stephen Sondheim-George Furth musical, also had received 15 nominations. ``Company, in fact, had 14 nominations,'' said Keith Sherman, a spokesman for the Tonys. ``In all the record books, Hal Prince was listed twice, for best production and best producer. In fact, `Company' only won for best production. We went back to the actually ballot from the '70s and noticed the truth.''

The Producers Breaks Tony Record With 15 Noms
The Producers received a whopping 15 Tony Award nods, surpassing Companys record for the most nominations ever. (Company set the record in 1971.)
Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Company also receive 15 nominations? I believe it should say The Producers TIES Tony Record with 15 Noms. Here it is, straight from the Tony site................Did you know?
The musical that garnered the most nominations was Company (1971), which received an all-time record 15 Tony nominations and won seven awards, including Best Musical.
The time stamp on Broadway.com says 1:07 a.m., weren't the nominations announced at 8:30 a.m.? I would have included Broadway.com with Playbill and Theatre.com, but I have problems getting their links at home on my Mac. Now that I'm at work, on a non-Mac, I can get to the links. Am I sounding snarky today?
