Saturday, May 12, 2001 I refuse to be left out in the cold about this. If all of the other columnists get to talk about their hair color, so do I, darn it! It's brown, and I'm proud of it! I don't think I'd look good as a blond, personally. Boy, that was every bit as exciting as I'd hoped it would be. I'm writing this while lying on the floor in my apartment. I don't have a laptop, but I do have a really good DSL connection, so that makes up for it. As for water, I think I'm going to go drink some right now. It's hot in here. posted at 5/12/2001 11:16:08 PM by Matthew Murray | Item Link First Annual National Bway Theatre Awards Include New and Old Names Taylor and Bologna are Going With Bway's Cort, July 17 2001 TONY AWARDS SPOTLIGHT: Nominees for Best Director of a Play Hit OB Urinetown Records Cast Album, Extends Through June 30 The Toronto Star Listening to Producers almost like being there by Richard Ouzounian The Mystery of Edwin Drood This was posted on RATM, thought some of you may be interested, from Richard Ouzounian of The Toronto Star.......I'm researching a newspaper article for the Toronto STAR, because our neighboring Shaw Festival is producing DROOD this summer. I just returned from a Little League game, where the dads needed to lighten up a bit, afterall, it's not the Broadway Softball League. No theatre here tonight. A week from today I will be seeing The Producers. My hair will never be blonde, it's naturally redish brown and I continue to reject the idea of those blonde highlights that have become so popular. I am stubborn that way. The only body of water I've been near is the puddle I jumped over in the parking lot at the ball game! And Bell's reasons for replacing Price, Bullock, and Anderson are sound and understandable. Though 15 of the nominations weren't that big of a surprise, there were a few selections (and omissions) that were unexpected. Regardless, June 3 will be a very interesting day this year. There is one thing I feel the need to mention. After the nominations were announced, three shows--The Gathering, Judgment at Nuremberg, and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer--announced a closing date of May 13. One show, however, announced something else that is, in its way, even scarier, but was not widely reported: Marty Bell: Time to Weisslerize A CLASS ACT The TB post mentions this article that discusses how Bell, the producer of the show, is planning to recast the show with "stars," with the exception of Tony nominee Randy Graff. While A Class Act is my favorite show of the season, I find this move sad and unfortunate. I wish that everyone could see the show, and while I understand the importance of drawing audiences, this is a move I simply wish they wouldn't take. My recommendation is to try to get to the Ambassador before the changes take place--the current cast is almost perfect, and certainly not to be missed. posted at 5/8/2001 07:40:43 AM by Matthew Murray | Item Link Monday, May 07, 2001 Threepenny Water Closet by Ken Mandelbaum Review: URINETOWN! I just got an email from the Editorial Director at Broadway.com. This is what he said, "Company received 14 nominations. The Tony Award record books have frequently said there was a separate category for Producer of a Musical, which is an error." Not only did I read the 15 nominations information on the Tonys site, I also heard it on several news programs (they probably got it from the Tonys site as well). So, I stand corrected, "The Producers" broke a record for Tony nominations! My apologies to Broadway.com. 'The Producers' Receives 15 Tony Nominations There was some confusion involving the previous record holder for most Tony nominations. For 30 years, it was thought that ``Company,'' the Stephen Sondheim-George Furth musical, also had received 15 nominations. ``Company, in fact, had 14 nominations,'' said Keith Sherman, a spokesman for the Tonys. ``In all the record books, Hal Prince was listed twice, for best production and best producer. In fact, `Company' only won for best production. We went back to the actually ballot from the '70s and noticed the truth.'' posted at 5/7/2001 10:57:11 AM by Susan Heim | Item Link The Producers Breaks Tony Record With 15 Noms The Producers received a whopping 15 Tony Award nods, surpassing Companys record for the most nominations ever.
