There really is not anything else to cover today except for the obvious. Musical theatre has changed, once again. At the party last night at Roseland, not one person there even remembered the Ragtime or Lion King opening. Those shows never happened. "The Producers" is here. For a long, long, long time. Bravo. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() posted at 4/20/2001 09:27:18 AM by James Marino | Item Link Well, since The Producers is making big enough news everywhere else, why not here? Barnes in The Post and Kissel in the Daily News even agree. Finally, we found a show that manages to unite the critics! Unfortunately, it's not all good news: ![]() ![]() Wasn't this really just a matter of time? Ticket prices seem to be increasing at an exponential rate lately. The story doesn't mention whether or not the $100 price includes the infamous "restoration fee," though I think we can all guess. Will there eventually be a revolt over high ticket prices? Is there any price people simply will not be willing to pay to see a play on Broadway? Strange as it may seem, there ARE other things going on: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This last story has since proved to be false, but it should be required reading if you don't know much about the Barrymore family. I was fortunate enough to be able to attend the Drama Desk panel with Marian Seldes, Kathleen Freeman, Betty Garrett, Jane White, Polly Bergen, Carol Woods, and Joan Roberts. What an amazing event that was. In addition to getting to hear each ruminate about her career, show business, and the creation behind the shows in which they are currently appearing, I was able to meet Bergen, Garrett, Freeman, Woods, and Roberts in person, which was thrilling for me. Each of these women has had a lengthy career for a reason. Plus, each was as nice and funny as could be. They are all true stars, and have worked very hard for the success that has come to them. posted at 4/20/2001 07:39:50 AM by Matthew Murray | Item Link Thursday, April 19, 2001 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Letters, scripts, notes, songs, recordings and ephemera belonging to the playwright and songwriter Abe Burrows have been donated to the New York Public Library. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The American Ballet Theater has recently exhibited a new cycle of strains, including a canceled production, cash shortages and staff defections. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Yesterday matinee with Tom Sawyer. It was very good and entertaining, but it was like "Blue Man Group at a mall" if I can quote a Canadian friend of mine. In a really tough season, this little show manages to shine all on its own. Too bad more people can't be convinced to go and see it--it has a wonderful score, and makes so many positive statements about life in the theatre. Someone I know said it should be required viewing for anyone in the business, and I couldn't agree more (except to say I think it should be required viewing for anyone who loves musical theatre, but I suppose that goes without saying). Not true! James and I saw him at THE Broadway Theatre tonight - at the opening of 'Blast!' Is that close enough? I love 'Blast!' - I really do. I think it's super, and I think everyone, except the New York Times, of course, would enjoy it. But since most of you are not Bruce Weber, go out and get tickets now. It's by far the most energetic thing I've seen onstage in a while, and no, I am not in the least bit blinded by the attractive snare drummer when I say that. Really. London was gray and rainy, the flu seems to be ravaging the West End (leads were out at 'Witches of Eastwick', 'The Beautiful Game' and 'The Secret Garden', among others). After my long-distance trek to be back in time for the 'Blast!' opening, I'm off to get some much needed sleep. posted at 4/17/2001 10:03:21 PM by Catherine Skidmore | Item Link ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() posted at 4/17/2001 09:13:57 AM by Susan Heim | Item Link Monday, April 16, 2001 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Missed this one the other day, inspiring story : ) posted at 4/16/2001 03:18:01 PM by Susan Heim | Item Link ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The play is at its best when it is telling its central story: a good man doomed by his own hand, the tormenting experience of his final days and its emotional repercussions among those around him. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() posted at 4/16/2001 02:48:28 PM by Susan Heim | Item Link Sunday, April 15, 2001 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() posted at 4/15/2001 07:38:03 PM by Susan Heim | Item Link ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() As befit a movie directed by one of the most manic writers in show business, "The Producers" piled shtick upon shtick. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() From Weekend Update on Saturday Night Live............Jimmy Fallon's Review of The Producers "The Producers it stars Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick.
